Helion Prime have had one hell of a busy 2017, kicking ass in a number of shows in the US, and thankfully, they’re all set to get to work on an album. Lead singer Kayla Dixon is a welcome addition to the Sacremento Power Metal band and has been received extremely well by their fans. Just before they head into the studio, Jason very kindly agreed to answer our questions.
Ok, Helion Prime, who’s the Riddick fan? (I’m guessing that’s where the name came from)
I came up with the idea to use the planet from Riddick. Originally we called ourselves Furyan but it was quickly changed. I am a huge fan of the riddick films I’m pretty sure all of us enjoy them and yet we still haven’t had a riddick movie night. We are doing something wrong.
You’ve been touring quite a bit recently, what for you makes a gig memorable for all the right reasons?
For me it’s not the amount of people that make a good show but the people who attend. Getting a chance to meet people who truly appreciate and love the music you are creativity makes everything worth it.
You’re about to start work on an album, which all of your fans are going to be excited to hear when it’s finished. I know you hate this sort of question, sorry, but, could you tell us a little bit about some of the tracks on it?
At this time I think it’s too soon to give away to many spoilers but I will say we are looking at about 9-10 tracks with possibly 3-4 bonus tracks. That is all subject to change of course the closer we get to wrapping up the album. You can expect the same lyrical theme this time around. Science facts and science fiction.
Are there any personal favourites amongst your songs, and why those ones?
Moon-Watcher is a favourite of mine lyrically. It’s based on the character of the same name from 2001 A Space Odyssey and Heather truly grasped the vision I had when she wrote them.
Sometimes when you hear hefty guitar riffs and see a female singer you either expect Angela Gossow or Tarja Turunen, so Kayla’s vocals are a welcome surprise! When you were looking for a vocalist did you know what sort of sound you wanted or did Kayla just knock it out of the park and changed your mind?
I knew from the beginning what I wanted vocally. I started the band with former singer Heather Michelle and when she departed Kayla was a perfect replacement.
You signed to AFM in January, what has that meant for Helion Prime in terms of support?
AFM has been great so far and is honestly a dream label for me. We shall see how things unfold with this second album.
And while we’re talking about support, you have a great set of fans, how does it feel to have your music appreciated by them?
It’s an amazing feeling. To me there is no better feeling then knowing your music speaks to people.
Social media, how difficult is it to keep on top of everything, and is it a blessing or a curse?
Ii find it very easy to keep on top of social media but that could be because I grew up with it and it was also just part of what I did. As far as a blessing or a curse that’s hard to say. Again it’s what I’m use to.
The Internet has enabled a great deal more bands and musicians to get their music out to potential listeners, but has that meant it’s ironically even harder to get noticed due to the amount of media people consume now?
I think people’s attentions are harder to keep these with so much coming at them all at once. I think it still comes down to the music, the musicians and luck
What have been the biggest challenges for Helion Prime so far, and how have you overcome those?
So far we continue to look for ways to get locked in on bigger tours. Be that management or booking agents. Haven’t figured it out just yet.
