Hollowstar – Some Things Matter EP

Hollowstar formed in St Ives in early 2015, bringing together the talents of vocalist/bassist Joe Bonson, drummer Jack Bonson, and guitarists Phil Haines and Tom Collett, to create a distinct take on classic, punchy rock. Quickly gaining traction following their debut gig, the lads have since had the pleasure of sharing stages with the likes of Chantel McGregor, Toseland, Barns Courtney and The Wholls, whilst receiving regular airplay on BBC Introducing.

Now sees Hollowstar unleashing their debut EP, “Some Things Matter”.

First track “Lay Down” has a familiar feel to it and very much reminded me of Kenny Wayne Shepherd’s “True Lies”, with vocals in the same ball park as Tyketto’s Danny Vaughan (but not quite with the same punch) or even Shark Island’s Richard Black (but not quite as erm, gnarly?, yeah, gnarly).  Now that might seem a bit “not as good as”, but let’s be blunt, Danny Vaughan and Richard Black, that’s one hell of a checklist.

“Holding it Together” has a lovely swagger to it.  It’s tight, it’s extremely professional and it’s confident.  That being said “Feel The Burn” is far more anthemic and memorable.  Some lovely guitar work lends a reflective mood that patiently builds to a strong chorus.

“New Age Lullaby” is never going to send anyone to sleep, with a brilliant groove kicking it along while Bonson growls that Little Bo Peep has “lost the whole fucking lot”, and in “Future City” it suddenly dawns on me that the vocals are very much like that of The Cult’s Ian Astbury (and that really does take some doing).

Final track “Guilty” is finished in a flash, maintaining Hollowstar’s sound and polished performance.  It’s a good EP, it’s a very good EP.  The only drawback is that it’s going to draw a lot of comparisons, and whether that’s going to do them any favours is questionable and the jury will be out on that one.  I certainly hope they do do well.  Everything is there, but the music business is bloody minded and fickle.
