Rae Fitzgerald – Popular Songs for Wholesome Families

Rae Fitzgerald has just released her full-length studio album, Popular Songs For Wholesome Families.  Normally here on The Junction I know we’re often associated with rock music, but the reality is, we’re quite a diverse bunch with eclectic music tastes.  Anyway, what we have here is a very ethereal folk album (although not too heavy on the folk), and some extremely poignant poetic lyrics penned by Fitzgerald, all of which seemingly based on her own experiences, from relationships to religion.

“Earth, Everything” is a delicate opening to Rae Fitzgerald’s new album and the flow into second track “Jackal ii” is almost seamless. So much so I had to double check it was a different song, but it’s nicely done with a steady progression.  The first real stand out track for me personally though is “Copper & Genesis”, a strong well written stand alone track.

“Yr. Side of the Mtn.” Reminded me a little of a softer sounding Heather Nova, with less pop, “False Moon” continues with Rae’s characteristic soft and gentle delivery.  “Dark Man” is an incredibly stripped back track, especially given that Rae doesn’t overpopulate her songs with a huge array of instruments to begin with.  It’s genuine honest down to earth music with no distractions.

“Lost in Ukrainian Village” is another personal favourite with a slight swing to the music, and an edge to Fitzgerald’s voice, it’s another stand out song.  “Magic Town” is just haunting, whilst “Medicine Cart” has a slightly fuller sound.

“Tower” is another ethereal track, but it feels as though there’s a lot more going on instrumentally compared to the majority of the rest of the album.  The album is brought to a close by “Jackal”, stripping things down again from “Tower”.

In a way, “Popular Songs for Wholesome Families” is less an album, but more of a musical personal diary that I’m sure many of us can relate to, and is well worth a read, I mean listen.
