“On Dead Waves” is the culmination of the extensive talents of James Chapman (otherwise known as Maps) and Polly Scattergood. Citing their influences as Brian Wilson, Bob Dylan and Jefferson Airplane (although they don’t go down that white rabbit tunnel soundwise), they describe their own sound as “a dark, intense, psychedelic dream, but one that all the family can enjoy”. I’m not so sure the psychedelic tag applies to this particular song, but I’m in agreement with it being somewhat dark and intense.
Scattergood’s vocals are quite simply utter haunting perfection. There are so many vocalists that try for this sound, but fail abysmally. Polly though is brilliant. Chapman on the other hand adds exactly what’s needed to create an audio masterpiece.
